WELCOME BACK BIGHORNS!

First up…

Thanks to everyone that made it to our back to school event last night! It was so nice to see and meet so many of you.

Here is the link to our Back to School Night Slides. If you have any questions, just let me know.

Back to School Slides

A couple reminders…

Please subscribe to my blog so that posts will automatically be emailed to you and you will be up to date on all the happenings. (Bottom right) I will post each week with updates on our class, due dates, tests, and things of this matter.

Don’t forget to sign and return those papers in the front pocket of the binder we sent home at the Back to School Night. If you didn’t make it, no worries, we will send it home Monday afternoon.

Homework: 7th and 8th Grade Reading–>20 minutes of reading every night. Students will have a home reading log that they will fill out each night to be checked the next day.  (This will not be their homework every night. There will be times that students come home with Flocabulary homework or have NoRedInk practice in lieu of reading.)

Electives – Make sure your kiddo has an idea of what class they would like to take during our electives block. Remember, we are starting with 8th, then moving to 7th, so having more than one picked out might be a good idea.

Student Council- Student council elections will be next THURSDAY! If your kiddo is thinking about running for a class office please encourage them to come chat with me.

Scholastic- Your kids deserve to read books they love! And when children get to choose their own books, research shows that they spend significantly more time reading for fun. I will send Scholastic Book Club flyers home throughout the year to help you build your family library. To get started and order online by setting up an account @ https://clubs.scholastic.com/  and enter our class code: P72B4

I am so excited for this year! We have loads of fun projects planned and will be working in some excellent novels. Here is what our first week looks like-

7th Grade Reading –  We will get right to work with our Daily 3 and CAFE strategies. Flocabulary is on the game plan for Mondays. I am excited to see how up to date our class is with current events happening around our world. During these first weeks we will also be really honing in on our reading stamina and working with the many forms of figurative language. We are planning to give the 7th graders their beginning of the year Reading MAPS assessments on Wednesday and Thursday.

7th grade writing- During the first week the kids will write about themselves with their “mini me” writing assignment. Each student will create a little paper person that represents who they are using pictures, words, and colors. Then they will write a paragraph explaining why they chose what they did. These will soon be posted in the hall, above our class hooks, outside of our classroom. Be sure to check them out in the coming days. We are also planning to give the 7th graders their beginning of the year English MAPS assessments on Wednesday and Thursday.

8th grade reading- This semester, Tuesdays and Thursdays will be dedicated to reading The Lord of the Flies. On Mondays we will check in on current events with Flocabulary while focusing on our CAFE strategies. Then Wednesdays will be full of poetry! I am so happy to have my class back for our ELA block!  We are planning to give the 8th graders their beginning of the year Reading MAPS assessments on Wednesday and Thursday.

8th grade writing: This first week will be all about our writing stamina! We will also do some fun community building activities to find our groove. We are planning to give the 8th graders their beginning of the year English MAPS assessments on Wednesday and Thursday.

Projects: Life Science will be the focus this semester with cells being our first area of expertise. This week we will learn about the differences between, functions and processes of plant and animal cells. Our students will also practice conducting research and decipher good sites from bad

I’m super excited for our first week back! See you Monday! =)
