Happy 2020 Bighorn Families,
Happy New Year!! Miss Garcia and myself hope you enjoyed your holiday season as much as we did. It was great fun to spend time baking, shopping, traveling, and enjoying the company of family and friends. Vacation was very relaxing and we feel so ready to come back to school. We can hardly wait to see all the kiddos!!
We’d like to send out a huge thank you for all the wonderful Christmas gifts and cards. On December 19th, we were presented with a lovely card with a very generous “Spa Finder” card. Thank you so much!!
Our Christmas Party was a hit thanks to the many parents that donated goodies and their time to run a station. All the help with the Christmas Parties was very much appreciated. They would not have been as successful without all the parent help!
Our new year in math will be starting off with working on 2 of the biggest standards adding and subtracting within 100 and 1,000. Students have worked on both these standards without renaming. For the next couple of weeks students will be using partial sums, partial differences, branching, the arrow method, and the standard algorithm to add and subtract with renaming.
In language the focus for our week will be capitalization. Students will be using the acronym MINTS (Months, days, and holidays, I the pronoun, Names of special people places, and things, Titles, and Start of every sentence). This is a skill that has been taught during the 1st semester of the school year but we will be formally teaching and assessing it this week.
Students will start the New Year off with a very short but technology filled writing assignment using the acronym JOY. The J stands for something the student just did, the O stands for one thing the student wants to improve in during 2019, and the Y stands for something special about you. Students will spend time talking and sharing their responses to the 3 statements. They will write a rough draft on paper and if time permits begin their final copies on the computer.
Students worked on Matter Slideshows before break. We weren’t going to have a parent presentation time, but students really would like to share their projects. Parents will have the opportunity to come to this presentation on Thursday, January 9th at 3:30 pm. Students will be presenting for 20 minutes. Hoping to see you at the presentation.
In addition to polishing up and practicing the slideshows, students will be working on a couple of STEM projects during this week. Students will go through the engineering process–identifying the task, brainstorm ways to complete the task, make a plan, use the plan to create, and determine what went well and what could be improved. Miss Garcia and myself are excited to see our student’s creativity as they go through the engineering process.
As Miss Garcia and myself look back on 2019, we can’t believe the changes we’ve seen in the students. With 2019 behind us, we’re excited to see the growth and development that 2020 will bring!
