# Week 9 in Second Grade

October 12, 2019 by Anne Bloomfield

October 14, 2019

On Monday, October 14th we will be beginning the 9th week of school. Thursday, October 17th will mark the end of the 1st quarter, but this only means that our specials will change. On October 21st Ms. Garcia’s/Mrs. Wiessmer’s class will start Kibo (robotics) with Miss Heidi and Mrs. Bloomfield’s class will start Community Service with Mr. Lenon. This school year is already going fast!!

Here’s the happenings of 2nd grade in a “nutshell”…

Math
Part of the 2nd grade math standards include adding and subtracting within 1,000 using strategies base on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. With that said, students practiced branching in addition. Second Graders are renaming in the ones place and will be renaming in the tens place and the ones and tens place. This can be a challenging concept that will be worked on throughout the year.

Branching Method Examples
Renaming in the Ones Place
37 + 28 =
↙ ↘ ↙ ↘
30 7 20 8
(30 + 20) + (7 + 8)
↘ ↙               ↘ ↙
50    +          15  =  65

Renaming in the Tens Place
23    +       191 =
↙   ↓  ↘      ↙  ↓  ↘
200 30 1 100 90 1

(200+100)+(30 + 90)+(1+1)
↘ ↙                  ↘ ↙         ↘ ↙
300       +       120    +      2    =   422

Renaming in the Ones and Tens Place

234    +      98 =
↙  ↓  ↘       ↙ ↘

200 30 90 8

(200+0)+(30 + 90)+(4+8)
↘ ↙             ↘ ↙          ↘ ↙
300     +     120   +     12  =  432

We realize that these strategies are very different from the traditional algorithm that we all learned but knowing these strategies helps to deepen the mathematical understanding of adding and subtracting.

Language
We finished up our work with irregular past tense verbs last week. Second graders will be working on adjectives. Adjectives are words that describe nouns. Students will be identifying adjectives and using adjectives to describe a noun. All 2nd graders will embark on a “mini” writing project that will be completed on their Chromebooks.

Writing
With our first work with opinions in the process of writing final drafts. Time for a little Halloween writing…The 2nd grade writers will be working on a short descriptive piece based on the book, I Need My Monster by Amanda Noll. Second Grade Writers will be creating their own monster and summarizing the story. This writing piece is perfect to tie in our work in language–adjectives.

Projects
Second grade Scientists have been learning about ways matter can be changed. Discussion has centered on whether changes in matter are reversible or irreversible. Students are working on an activity involving chocolate chips that is focusing on the changes. Students will be completing this activity on Monday. The rest of our project time will be spent learning about molecules and how they behave in the 3 forms of matter.

Wishing all our Bighorn Families a productive and happy week!!

Sincerely,
Anne Bloomfield, Miss Garcia, and Mrs. Wiessmer
