Week 8 with Mrs. Farley

October 21, 2018 by Kim Sorensen & Rebecca Farley

Thank you to those parents who were able to come and visit our classroom last week and watch our Nevada Settler model presentations. ALL of the students worked extremely hard and I am so VERY proud of them. They were also on their best behavior and used great listening skills as we visited Mrs. Feest’s class to take notes on her student’s models.

This week in projects we will complete our Nevada settler project by creating a Venn diagram to compare children from the late 1800’s to children today. The students will present their diagrams to their classmates, then hang them in the hallway on our “Bravo Board.”  Tuesday is our field trip to the Churchill County Museum! On Wednesday, we will introduce our next project-Maps, which will focus on the geography of Nevada. This will be a fun group project where the students will learn about different types of maps and their components, vocabulary, and then create a model map of the state of Nevada.

In writing we will continue our focus on narratives. The students are currently working on generating story ideas to write personal narratives. Last week we introduced organizers that focused on using special memories shared with someone we care about to create story ideas. This week we will focus on using emotions to generate story ideas. I hope this will be a fun writing focus for them, since they get to choose who and what they will write about. PS- I love reading what your children write, and I am always asking them to send me an email or note, just to tell me about their day.The students will be working toward writing a narrative as though they were an early Nevadan settler based on their recent project research. This week’s Sentence of the Week will focus on relative pronouns. Students will continue to use relative pronouns (that, which, who, whom, and whose) to connect a clause or phrase to a noun or pronoun. I will be encouraging them to use these in their writing this week as well.

Just a few reminders:

Remember to send in your Box Tops! We appreciate your support in this endeavor.

The Oasis Academy Student Council is sponsoring a Food Drive for our community which is in dire need of non-perishable items. Please send donations in with your students or bring them into the front office and place them in the collection box.

National Junior Honor Society will be sponsoring their annual Coat Drive later this next week through mid-November (just before Thanksgiving break). Please donate any clean and gently used coats, hats, scarves, gloves or mittens to be distributed to our community. Their collection box will be placed in the front office area later this week as well.

We will be holding our class Halloween party on October 31st…check your email for the link to the sign up sheet. I GREATLY appreciate any items or volunteers that can help plan a fun afternoon for our kids!

Future Fest Dinner- The annual Oasis Academy Future Fest Dinner is coming Nov. 2. Tickets are $25. This night is a lot of fun, and supports ALL the Oasis extracurricular activities. I have personally donated a lunch date and homemade dessert! I would love to share a lunch with one of MY students!

Have a great week, and please email me if I can help your child in any way.
