Week 4

Dear Parents,

 

Here we are in the 4th week of school, going on our 12th day as a class of 2nd graders. Miss Garcia, Mrs. Wiessmer, and myself really feel like our classes are in a great groove!!

 

Dress-up Days

We will be having two “dress-up” days in September.  The first will be on Wednesday, September 11th. For a $1.00 donation students may wear red, white, and blue clothing in honor of Patriot Day.  The second “dress-up” day will be Pajama Day on Thursday, September 26th. Students may wear pajamas to school for a donation of any amount. All money from Pajama Day will go to a charity for childhood cancer.  For both “dress-up” days the clothing worn must cover as much as the school uniform.

 

Picture Day for 2nd graders will be on Tuesday, September 24th. Information about purchasing pictures will go home soon.  Students wear their uniforms for picture day.

Here’s a little about what 2nd graders are learning!!

 

Math

This week in Math we worked on modeling and writing 3-digit numbers; using base ten blocks, money, and place-discs.  This week we will be comparing numbers up to 1,000. Students will be using the comparison symbols < less than, > greater than, and = equal to.  We will also be counting on and counting back by ones, tens, and hundreds.

Language

In language, 2nd graders worked on expanding simple sentences.  Students are adding adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases to expand a simple sentence.

Last night the brown dog slept in the kitchen. 

 

This week students will work on rearranging sentences.

Tomorrow, we will go out for ice-cream.

We will out for ice-cream tomorrow.

 

We are planning to assess students on this standard on Wednesday.

 

Writing

Second graders are working on their first writing that will go through the complete writing process. Students are writing riddles about themselves. So far students have worked on  prewriting, writing a rough draft, revising, and editing. This week students will conference with their teacher and be ready to write their final drafts. This first writing project should be on display in the hall by next week.

Projects

We have completed learning about all the Tribes Agreements. This week we will be finishing writing our letters to local businesses.  Students will be divided into groups of 4. They will be selecting a business to send a letter to and start working on their poster on a Tribes Agreement. We are hoping these posters will be posted around the community and will be a reminder of the Tribes Agreements that we all should be striving to follow.
