Week 32

May 8, 2019 by Jami Rowlett

Hello First Grade Families,

It’s so hard to believe we only have 5 weeks of school left. We will definitely be busy finishing up our first grade learning and preparing for second grade.

Important Information:
We will take the MAPS reading and math tests the week of May 20. I will let you know which days of the week our first graders will be testing. They will not take both tests on the same day.
Thank you to everyone that placed a Scholastic Book Order. I will send the books home with your child when they are delivered to the school.
The Book Fair will be May 13-16. It will be open before school, during lunch, and after school.

Last week in first grade:We learned how to use MINTS to help us remember capital letters for months/days, I, names, titles, and beginning of sentences.
We practiced finding the main topic and key details in a paragraph.
We reviewed how to use adjectives to make our writing more exciting.
We began writing our rough drafts of our small moment narrative stories.
We started exploring shadows and the sun, moon, and stars.

This week in first grade:
We will begin our word study of -eat words.
We will continue practicing using MINTS and take an assessment on this skill.
We will learn how to use commas in a series with adjectives.
We will continue writing our small moment stories and begin the revising/editing process.
We will explore the sun, moon and stars in greater detail.

A Math Message from Miss Garcia:

This week the first grade students will finish up their fraction unit. They will take an assessment on fractions by Thursday. In class, we continue to work on adding multiples of 10 to any number, name 3-dimensional shapes and use multiple strategies to solve problems. MAP Testing is coming up soon! The first graders will test the week of May 20th. I will post the exact days as it gets closer.
