Week 25

February 23, 2020 by Melinda Santos

Welcome to trimester 3! Hard to believe we’re in that final stretch. We will continue to work hard and finish the year off strong.

This past week, we began making our suitcases for our immigration simulation. We had lots of thoughtful discussions and researched some of the most common items immigrant brought with them to America. When helping your child select the items for their suitcase, please remind them that each item should have sentimental value to them and/or serve a purpose either on their journey or once they “arrive” in America.

This week, we will be practicing the following skills:

Social Studies:  We will experience the challenges immigrants faced when they arrived at Ellis Island through an immigration simulation. Please make sure your child brings their suitcase items, completed suitcase form and any clothing items they will be wearing for Wednesday’s simulation by Tuesday the 25th.  Tomorrow, I will be sending home information for parents who signed up to help on Wednesday.  Please let me know if you do not receive it or have any questions.

Writing:  We will synthesize the information we learned about the immigration process to write a How To Immigrate to America piece to go along with our informational writing unit.  In cursive we will be working on the letter X.

3rd Grade ELA:  We will use a Book of Animal Poetry to learn about the way poems are structured and learn how to identify the different poetic devices used in poetry.  During Daily 5, students will work on Must Do/May Dos and meet with me for reading groups.

    Spelling:

  • Students should continue to practice their spelling words for at least 5 minutes each night as part of their 20 minutes of reading homework.  Students will receive new spelling words this week. The next spelling test will be on Thursday, March 5th.

Latin/Greek:

  • Every week, students are given 5 words that introduce either a new prefix or suffix.  They will practice these words throughout the week and have a test every Thursday over the prefix or suffix meaning.  Our prefix this week will be “dis”.

4th Grade ELA:   We will use a Book of Animal Poetry to review poetry structure. Additionally, we will practice identifying various poetic devices used within a poem and discuss why the poet used them. During Daily 5, students will work on Must Do/May Dos and meet with me for reading groups.
