Week 24

February 16, 2020 by Melinda Santos

Last week, our class enjoyed going on a Google expedition to the American west as we continue to learn about immigration to America and how that affected westward expansion. We also attended the first semester awards assembly to celebrate all the hard work these students are putting in!

This upcoming week will be a short one due to President’s Day, but it will also mark the end of the 2nd trimester (is it just me or is time FLYING by?!). We will wrap up a few assessments to gauge our mastery of 2nd trimester skills and begin finalizing grades for report cards and parent-teacher conferences.

Our focus skills for the week will be:

Social Studies:  We will continue discussing immigration by brainstorming ideas of items we would bring if we had to immigrate to another country and by thinking about the viewpoint of immigrants.

Writing:  We will begin learning about the different parts of an informative essay.  In cursive we will be working on the letter V.

3rd Grade ELA:  We will use our mentor text, Last Stop on Market Street, to identify the mood and tone of the story and review compound words.  During Daily 5, students will work on Must Do/May Dos and meet with me for reading groups.

    Spelling:

  • Students should continue to practice their spelling words for at least 5 minutes each night as part of their 20 minutes of reading homework.  Spelling test will be on Thursday, February 20th.

Latin/Greek:

  • Every week, students are given 5 words that introduce either a new prefix or suffix.  They will practice these words throughout the week and have a test every Thursday over the prefix or suffix meaning.  Our prefix this week will be “im”.

4th Grade ELA:  We will use our mentor text, Last Stop on Market Street, to identify the mood and tone of the story and how we can use this information to determine theme and author’s purpose. We will also review compound words.

Our prefix this week “oct”.

REMINDERS:

  • Reading homework log needs to be signed every night and homework folders brought back to class everyday. Logs will be checked every Monday.
  • Parent/Teacher conferences will be February 28th.  A Sign-Up Genius link will be sent via email to 3rd grade parents. If any 4th grade parents would like to meet, please let me know. I can also provide notes and feedback to Mrs. Antoniono/Mrs.Feest if you plan on meeting with them.
  • Scholastic is having lots of deals for their 100th anniversary so now is a great time to order books! Our Scholastic class code for ordering is     VY888. https://www.scholastic.com/home/

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Have a wonderful week!

Thank you,

Melinda Santos

A Note from Mrs. Antoniono:

This week in math we dove into our fraction unit a little deeper- comparing fractions, finding fractions on a number line and even started identifying equivalent fractions.  I continue to be impressed with the success we’re having through this challenging concept.  Next week marks the end of Trimester 2.  We will be taking our End of Trimester assessments so I can best gauge where everyone stands going into report cards and parent/teacher conferences.  As always, please be in touch with any questions or concerns about math!
