Dear Parents,

Happy Valentine’s Week!!  As has been mentioned in a prior blog, since Valentine’s Day is not on a school day, we will not be having a party.  Students may bring in Valentines to give to their classmates. We will take some time on Thursday afternoon to distribute Valentines for students to enjoy at home on Friday!

Also remember that this coming weekend is President’s Day.  There will be no school on Monday, February 17th.

Our 2nd Trimester Parent Teacher Conferences will take place on Friday, February 28th.  A “Sign Up Genius” will be coming out by the beginning of next week.

We will finish our work on adding and subtracting within 100 and 1,000 with and without renaming.  Students have been working hard using the branching strategy and partial sum/difference strategy to add and subtract.  We will review adding and subtracting within 100 Monday and assess. On Tuesday we will review adding and subtracting within 1,000 and assess.  At the end of the week we will begin our unit on measurement.

Second grade writers will be beginning to work on narratives.  Last week we reviewed the elements of narrative writing. This week student writers will be writing a personal narrative.  Students will spend the beginning of the week the week planning their narrative and the end of the week writing their rough draft.

Apostrophes, apostrophes, apostrophes, we will continue our work on using apostrophes in contractions and possessive nouns.  Students will work on a group apostrophe collage on Monday, review on Tuesday, and assess on Wednesday.

On Thursday we will start reviewing comma standards from 1st grade before moving into the 2nd grade standards on commas next week.

In projects this week, students worked hard in their project groups researching their landmark.  Students are learning about their landmarks location, founder, important dates related to the landmark, size, historical significance, and interesting facts.  Research will continue through this week.

Wishing everyone a great week, a Happy Valentine’s Day, and a fun long President’s Day weekend!!
