Dear Parents,

Valentine’s Day may be over but Miss Garcia and I are still feeling the love from all the cards, candy, and gifts that students gave us. A special thanks goes out to the parents that supplied items for the parties and were able to come and help out during the party!! From the bottom of our hearts–THANK YOU!!

Miss Garcia and myself hope that everyone enjoyed the extra long weekend! It was so nice to have an extra day but we are ready for another great week in 2nd grade!

Students have continued to work on adding and subtracting with renaming within 1,000. This past week students focused on the branch method. Students picked up on this strategy quickly.

Math
This week we will continue working on using the branching strategy to subtract with renaming within 100 and within 1,000. To do this students are using negative numbers and are rocking it!!
Branching with Renaming in Subtraction
Examples:

 Subtracting with Renaming in the Tens 7 4 5   –   1 6 3 = ↙ ↓ ↘     ↙ ↓ ↘ 700 40 5 100 60 3 (700 – 100) + (40 – 60) + (5 – 3) 600 – 20 + 2 = 5 8 0 + 2 = 5 8 2 1. Decompose numbers by place value. 2. Group hundreds. Group tens. Group ones. 3. Subtract hundreds. Subtract tens. Subtract ones. 4. Watch out for negative differences. 5. Write and solve renamed equation. Subtracting with Renaming in the Ones and the Tens 7 6 2    –    2 8 3 = ↙ ↓ ↘          ↙ ↓ ↘ 700 60 2      200 80 3 (700 – 200) + (60 – 80) + (2 – 3) 700 – 20 – 1 = 7 0 0 – 2 1 = 6 7 9 1. Decompose numbers by place value. 2. Group hundreds. Group tens. Group ones. 3. Subtract hundreds. Subtract tens. Subtract ones. 4. Watch out for negative differences. 5. Write and solve renamed equation.

Language
In language, students will be increasing their vocabulary by working with synonyms. Students will be ordering words by intensity. For example, angry and livid are synonyms for the word mad. If you ordered these synonyms from weakest to strongest, they would be mad, angry, livid. In light of last week’s weather we could use the following example…
Windy → Blustery → Gale

Writing
Students are still working on editing and revising their personal narratives. This narrative writing assignment has been the longest writing our 2nd graders have written. Our teacher/student conferencing is taking a bit longer and has been hard to schedule. Miss Garcia and myself are hoping to meet with all students this week. From the conferencing that we have completed, we think the wait will be well worth it.

Projects
Our student scientists switched from exploring bodies of water to land forms. Some of the land forms students are learning about include mountains, plateaus, hills, plains, valleys, deserts, canyons, islands, peninsulas, and capes. We are in the process of looking at examples of all of these land forms using Google Earth. Whenever possible we are looking at examples that are located in Nevada. This week we hope to build models of the land forms using clay.

It looks like it’s going to be another chilly week and students are outside for recess and P.E. Please be sure that you child is dressed for the weather with a jacket or sweatshirt.

Sincerely,
Anne Bloomfield

Shannon Garcia
