Week 22

February 3, 2020 by Shannon Garcia

                                                                               February 3, 2020

Dear Bighorn Families,

Miss Garcia and myself can’t believe we just changed the calendar pieces from January to February!!  How can we be done with the first calendar month of the year???

Math

In math, 2nd grade students have been working very hard using branching method to add with renaming within 100 and 1,000.  This week students will focus on subtracting using the branching method to subtract with renaming within 100 and 1,000. This work involves a lot of decomposing and composing of numbers.  This is very challenging work, but students are quickly becoming experts.

Language

It’s time to focus on apostrophes.  Students will begin the week using apostrophes in contractions (I will = I’ll).  During the second half of the week, students will be using apostrophes in possessive nouns.

The dog that belongs to Miss Garcia slept in the living room.

Writing

Second grade writers are finishing up their winter opinion piece.  Students will complete final drafts in the beginning of the week. Our next writing piece will be a narrative.  Students will review the elements of a narrative. They will listen to some winter/Valentine read alouds and map out the story using a quick sketch notetaker. Projects

Student Historians have selected their landmark and have been partnered with a student that was interested in the same landmark.  Our week will start with students finding their landmark on Google Earth. Students will spend the rest of the week researching their landmark and filling out a notetaker with information.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is coming up on Friday, February 14th.  Since this holiday doesn’t fall on a school day, we will not be having a Valentine’s Day Party.  Students may bring in Valentine Cards to pass out on Thursday, February 13th. Our plan is to have students pass out Valentines at the end of the day and take them home so that they may open and enjoy them on Friday.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Bloomfield and Miss Garcia
