Week 20, Jan 21-23

January 20, 2020 by Kim Sorensen & Rebecca Farley

We hope you have enjoyed the long weekend with your family! We had a great and productive week last week as we worked through project and writing.

4th Grade Math: This past week we took our Winter MAPS math test and I am so proud of how well we did as a class. Our goal was reach 300 growth points with both 4th grade classes and our class by itself grew over 200 points! These students work hard and they have shown that with their testing. This week we will be multiplying fractions and on Thursday will celebrate our MAPS scores with a game day. If you would like to come in and are an approved volunteer, we would love to have you join us in playing a variety of different board games. With the new MAPS scores, I have updated their individual learning plans on Khan Academy Mappers. Those who have worked on these lessons have shown great growth in their MAPS scores.

3rd Grade Math: This past week we also took our Winter MAPS math test and I am so proud of how well we did as a class. Our goal was reach 300 growth points with both 3rd grade classes and our class by itself grew 300 points! These students work hard and they have shown that with their testing. This week we will continue multiplying and dividing with 8s and 9s and on Thursday will celebrate our MAPS scores with a game day. If you would like to come in and are an approved volunteer, we would love to have you join us in playing a variety of different board games. With the new MAPS scores, I have updated their individual learning plans on Khan Academy Mappers. Those who have worked on these lessons have shown great growth in their MAPS scores.

In writing last week, we discussed transitions and conclusions. We had some great class discussion about how important these skills are in our opinion writings and each student did a great job of implementing them into their masterpiece. I met with many students to make final edits and revisions to their masterpiece. This week, students will publish their masterpiece by either typing or handwriting their final draft. I am excited to see the final product as they have been working EXTREMELY hard on them.

In projects last week, we had a great lesson on rocks and minerals. Students participated in a fun hands on activity with Starbursts to create their own metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. As a class we used a microwave to create a Starburst igneous rock! We were also able to participate in a Virtual Reality experience facilitated by Mr. Kelly to explore fossils. This week we will begin our natural resources unit by learning the characteristics of NON renewable resources. I appreciate the time spent studying projects vocabulary words at home, it REALLY makes a difference.
