Dear Bighorn Families,

Miss Garcia and myself hope everyone enjoyed the four day weekend in honor of Martin Luther King Day!

In math, 2nd grade students have been working very hard using previously learned strategies (partial difference) renaming the ones and tens to subtract within one thousand. This work involves a lot of decomposing of numbers and working with subtracting that results in a negative number when solving for the partial difference. This is very challenging work, but students are using tools (number line with -10 to 10) and games to help them. We will continue working on addition and subtraction within 100 and 1,000 with renaming for this week and next week. We are so proud of our students!!
In language, students will be increasing their vocabulary by working with synonyms. Students will be ordering words by intensity. For example, angry and livid are synonyms for the word mad. If you ordered these synonyms from weakest to strongest, they would be mad, angry, livid. In light of the weather last Thursday we could use the following example…
Windy → Blustery → Gale
Second grade writers will be working on opinions for the next 2 weeks! Students worked on opinion writing during the 1st trimester, so we will be building on this knowledge. Our big focus will be helping students expand on explaining their reasons with specific, strong examples.
We are starting a new project this week!! Students will be working in the area of Social Studies, specifically geography. Our project will focus on students learning about and locating historically important landmarks in the United States. This will be a new project and we are hoping that students will enjoy learning about our country’s history through famous landmarks.

Wishing you all a great week!

Mrs. Bloomfield and Miss Garcia
