Although we are on trimesters, this week marks the beginning of the second half of the school year. It’s hard to believe that in 18 weeks your 2nd grader will be a 3rd grader. Time is going so fast!
Miss Garcia and myself would like to thank all the family and friends that were able to come to hear the Matter Slideshows on Thursday afternoon. We had quite a crowd and the students really appreciated the support. We are so proud of our students! Remember to check the blog to see upcoming events or new information.
With the 2nd semester starting this week, our schedule is changing slightly. Our specials class will now be Art with Mrs. Johnson instead of Kibo.
Our work in Math last week and for the next few weeks will be focusing on addition and subtraction with renaming. We will be using the same strategies (branching method, and partial sums and differences) that students have already been taught.
This past week we used the partial sum strategy to add within 100 and 1,000 with renaming in the ones and the tens place. Students have done a great job with this standard. This week we will focus on the partial difference strategy to subtract with renaming within 100 and 1,000. Students will be using a number line to subtract equations that will result in a negative number.
Second grade writers are continuing to work on their JOY (J=something you just did, O=one thing you want to improve on in 2020, and Y=some special or unique about you) writing from last week. All students have completed their rough drafts and are working on writing this piece on their Chromebooks. This writing will completed this week.
In language, students will be increasing their vocabulary by working with synonyms. Students will be ordering words by intensity. For example, angry and livid are synonyms for the word mad. If you ordered these synonyms from weakest to strongest, they would be mad, angry, livid. Our work on synonyms will continue for 2 weeks.
With our Matter Projects completed we will work on our STEM work for the remainder of the week. Currently, students are working with a partner to produce the longest paper chain. Students have addressed the challenge of making the longest paper chain by discussing the best method, designing a plan that included a picture and a short written plan. Teams of students have started putting their plans into action. This action will be completed this week, with students completing their chains. These chains will be measured and students will have an opportunity to adjust their plan.
