Week 18 in Second Grade

Dear Bighorn Parents,

Miss Garcia and myself hope everyone enjoyed the four day weekend in honor of Martin Luther King Day!

Math
In math, students completed their work in the area of Geometry. Even though the Geometry Unit has been completed and students tested on Thursday; students will continue to practice geometric shapes in review work.
This week students will start adding with renaming. We will add with renaming by making the next 10 or next 100.

Language
Students will finish working with words that need to be capitalized and on Wednesday they will be assessed.
Our next focus in language will be learning about pronouns (words that take the place of a noun). We have worked with personal pronouns (I, you, they, and we… to name a few), possessive pronouns which show ownership (mine, his hers, and theirs), and finally reflexive pronouns (himself, ourselves, and myself).
Personal Pronoun Example
My brothers went fishing last Saturday.
They went fishing last Saturday.
Possessive Pronoun Example
Mike’s fish was the biggest.
His fish was the biggest.
Reflexive Pronoun Example
Mike unhooked the fish himself.
This work will begin this week and go into next week.

Projects
Students have been working diligently on their landmark slideshows and we have a date for their formal presentation!! Mark you calendar for Tuesday, January 29th. We will present from 3:00 to 3:45 pm in our classrooms. Each classroom has 8 different groups for you to see.
This week students will be finishing and polishing up their slideshow and practicing their presentations.

A note from Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Rowlett…

Hello 2nd Grade Families,

Our word study for the next 2 weeks will be on ice words (mice, splice, slicing). The second graders will find words that follow this pattern on Tuesday, we will make a common list and throughout the next 2 weeks they will complete word work activities that go along with words in this family. We will revisit how when the letter c is followed by e, i, or y it makes the /s/ sound. We will also review how when adding ing you must drop the e then add ing. 2nd graders will have a word work assessment on on Thursday – 1/31. We use spelling test paper because we are using up our spelling test paper supply from last year.

We will continue to work on Main Idea of a whole passage and the supporting details of each paragraph with in the passage.
