Week 17- Gingerbread Stories

I am so excited for this special week in Kindergarten!  The kids can hardly wait for Christmas to arrive. We will continue to read, write, and do math each day but we will do so with a special hum of happiness!

Our theme this week is Gingerbread Stories. It is an enjoyable and rich way to practice comparing and contrasting stories.  We will be finding similarities and differences between stories in regards to characters, settings, and events. We will also continue to practice retelling the important parts of fiction stories.  You can help with this skill by asking about the stories that they hear and read at school and with you at home.

For writing, we will be having a cookie taste test. We will record what we notice with our senses, share our opinion, and a pose a question to our readers.

In math, our measurement unit will focus on length, height, and weight this week. We have a great variety of books and hands on activities to help us explore comparing these.

I want to thank everyone who has signed up to send items in for our party on Thursday and those who will be running our party stations. You are so generous!

Fun, completely optional winter themed work packets will be coming home this week. I don’t usually send these types of things home, but a co-worker accidentally overprinted and I figured it would be better to send them to homes where they might be used and enjoyed than simply tossing them. These are meant to be fun and do not need to be done at all. Students who do choose to do the packet and bring it back will be given a bonus Work Ethic stamp on their incentive chart for every page completed in a quality way. Absolutely no pressure!

Next week, some of the middle school students are opening up their lemonade stands- this year with hot chocolate as well. This is an Oasis tradition. It is a competitive exercise of commerce and the middle schoolers come up with some very enticing ways to get customers to visit their stands. The price is usually 25 cents per cup of lemonade, 50 cents for hot chocolate, with some add ins such as marshmallows or whipped cream for an additional 25 cents. Students tend to spend as much as they are given at one time. This can lead to a lot of liquid in tiny bladders at a time when a lot of young ones are experiencing the same situation which can lead to bathroom accidents. Please keep this in mind when deciding how much money to send with your child. It is also helpful if you remind them that if they drink lemonade or hot chocolate at lunch recess, they should also make a bathroom trip during that same break. If you know that your child has a more delicate bladder, it may not be a bad idea to send a change of clothes in their backpacks. We are talking a lot of lemonade and hot chocolate being consumed- it may not be a bad idea regardless 🙂 

As we countdown the days to Christmas break, I hope that you are able to take some time to relax and enjoy your child’s joy this season.

Reading should include a variety of the following activities

– reading stories (your child should at times be the reader and at other times be the listener)

– reading the poems in the binder

– working on alphabet sounds and letter names (students have mastered sounds and names should be shifting this practice time to noticing these within their own reading and writing)

– sight word games/practice.

This week, objective T1, T2, and T4 (Long and short, Tall and short, Light and Heavy) as well as the measurement objectives T7-T11 warrent some time. Capacity will be a focus when we ome back from break.

Your child can explore any other objectives they are interested in. Reviewing and increasing fluency in Section C skills is also a good use of their time. Remember, real world practice of these skills is also great for building up their foundational skills.
