Week 16- Hedgehogs

Our theme this week is Hedgehogs. We will be continuing our writing based on facts we learn from our nonfiction reading. Our fiction book will be Jan Brett’s The Snowy Nap.

In math, we begin a new unit on measurement. This unit involves quite a bit of making comparisons. We will also be using nonstandard units of measurement such as using cubes to measure length- although that focus will be later in the unit.

Several reading groups have been coming across occasions to use our helpful reading strategy friend Chunky Monkey.  A good time to use Chunky Monkey is when we come across a long word we aren’t sure about, such as ketchup. We can look at this big word and see if there are any smaller chunks that we know. Within the word “ketchup” we can find the secret story “ch” and the sight word “up”. These pieces then help us sound out the whole word and make it make sense in our sentence.



10 minutes each night. 

Reading should include a variety of the following activities

– reading stories (your child should at times be the reader and at other times be the listener)

– reading the poems in the binder

– working on alphabet sounds and letter names (students have mastered sounds and names should be shifting this practice time to noticing these within their own reading and writing)

– sight word games/practice.

This week, I recommend reviewing any objectives in the W section and beginning to work on objectives T1 and T2 (Long and short, Tall and short).

Your child can explore any other objectives they are interested in. Reviewing and increasing fluency in Section C skills is also a good use of their time. Remember, real world practice of these skills is also great for building up their foundational skills.
