Dear Parents,

Welcome back from vacation!! Miss Garcia and myself hope that everyone had a wonderful vacation and fun, family-filled Thanksgiving.

The week before vacation students finished, reviewed, and assessed on 2 and 3-dimensional shapes. As we come back to school, 2nd grade students will be working on telling time to the nearest 5 minutes on both digital and analog clocks. We will also be labeling an event with a time and a.m. or p.m. This is a very short unit that will be completed this first week back.

This week in Language, students will be working with pronouns. We will start by reviewing personal, possessive, and indefinite pronouns (1st grade standards). Students will then learn about reflexive pronouns (myself, ourselves, etc.) Reflexive pronouns are pronouns that refer back to the subject.

We bought ourselves a snack at the movies.

The reflexive pronoun (ourselves) refers back to the subject (we).

Our focus on writing will be in the area of informative/explanatory writing. Students will be spending some time learning about the elements of this type of writing (an introduction, facts and definitions that develop the points, and a conclusion). Informative/Explanatory writing can take many forms, including short non-fiction reports and “how to” texts. We will be focusing on “how to” texts.

We will finish our work in the area of matter this week. Students will be partnering up to create a short slideshow about matter. They will select a form of matter solid, liquid, or gas. Then students will give information about how that form of matter acts. They will also pick a specific example of their form of matter to describe it’s properties and if it changes with heating or cooling.

Looking forward to amazing week back!!
