Dear Second Grade Families,
We are down to the last 4 days before Christmas Break!! I know that everybody has busy households as we finish all our Christmas preparations, yet stay caught up with our day to day activities. Easier said than done–but try very hard to enjoy some peace within this busy time of year.
Colds, temperatures, and flu, oh my!! All of those lovelies seemed to hit the 1st and 2nd grade classes this week. Miss Garcia and myself are hoping that everyone is healthy and stays healthy for our final week of school before vacation.
Last week students took the reading MAPs Test. As mentioned during conferences, students will be taking the math MAPs Test. We have some technology issues to work through, but students may possibly take it on Tuesday or Wednesday, December 18th or 19th. If these dates do not work out, we will assess in January. As soon as we have confirmation, we will let you know.
Our work with graphing has continued. Students have used data to create a tally charts, picture graphs, and bar graphs. They have also answered questions using graphs. This week students will finish up the unit on graphing by developing a survey question, surveying other students, collecting data on a tally chart, and showing the data on both a picture graph and bar graph. Students will write questions based on the data collected for other students to answer. We will also assess this standard.
We finished our work on collective nouns. The students did a great job creating a slide for our Collective Noun Slide Show. This week we will move onto compound words. In this standard, students have to determine the meaning of the compound word based on the words in the compound word.
Here’s an example: Gingerbread is a bread made of ginger.
We are finishing up our Gift to the World pieces. Your children have amazed us with their thoughtful gifts that they would like to give to special people.
In projects this week, students worked hard in their project groups researching their landmark. Students are learning about their landmarks location, founder, important dates related to the landmark, size, historical significance, and interesting facts. This week students will be putting together a slide show about their landmark. We will be setting up a presentation date in January.
A “Sign Up Genius” has been sent out for our 2nd Grade Christmas Party. The party will be on Thursday, December 20th from 2:30 pm to 3:45 pm. Thank you to everyone who has signed up, your time, talent, and donations to our party is truly appreciated!!
As we close out the year 2018, we’re wishing all Second Grade Families a wonderful, restful, and safe holiday season!
