Welcome back from vacation!! Miss Garcia and myself hope that everyone had a wonderful vacation and fun, family-filled Thanksgiving. The first week back from vacation will be a busy one as it is also the last week of the first trimester!
Since the first trimester will be ending this week, Parent Conferences will be coming up. The official date for conferences will be Friday, December 7th. I will also be leaving some available times open during the following week. You should receive a Sign Up Genius notification by this Wednesday.
Last week, students worked on adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers using the partial sum and partial difference strategy. Our students have done a fantastic job working on learning 3 different strategies to add and subtract with 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. Miss Garcia and myself are very proud of all our 2nd graders.
This week, we will start off working with one day of review of using the partial sum and partial difference strategy with a mixed practice (both addition and subtraction problems on the same sheet). Students will also be using their addition and subtraction strategies on word problems. We will be determining whether a problem is a part, part, whole problem or a whole, part, part problem. Then we will move towards working with gathering data, creating graphs, and interpreting graphs.
This week we will continue our work with adverbs. This part of speech can be a little tricky. Adverbs describe verbs. They tell how, when, or where an action happens.
The dog walked quickly to the house. (how)
Tomorrow, I will go to the store. (when)
The young boy skipped downstairs. (where)
The second graders will finish their opinion pieces this week. All 2nd grade writers have selected a holiday that they feel is the best holiday. They have to state their opinion, give three reasons, explain each reason, and then restate their opinion. Students have picked a wide variety holidays. The finished products will be completed this week.
We are starting a new project this week!! Students will be working in the area of Social Studies, specifically geography. The state of Nevada updated the Social Studies Standards in March. Our project will focus on students learning about and locating historically important landmarks in the United States. This will be a new project and we are hoping that students will enjoy learning about our country’s history.
Looking forward to amazing week back!!
