Dear Parents,

Here we are in week 11 and the last week of October.  It will be an exciting week with Halloween on Thursday!!

Oasis Academy will be hosting a Book Fair November 4th-7th.  The second grade classes will be going as a class on Tuesday, November 5th in the afternoon.

Math

Students worked with fractions this week.  Students learned that fractions are equal shares of a whole.  During the week students spent time partitioning wholes into halves, thirds, and quarters.  They also used unifix cubes to model fractions. Our work with fractions will continue next week.

Language

Our work with adjectives finished up last week.    Students completed a “mini” project on their Chrome Books.  Each student selected a picture and created an “Adjective Pyramid” describing their picture.  This was a great activity to not only learn about adjectives but to also learn more about our Chrome Books.  Through this activity students needed to create a document, insert an image, explore font style, size, and color, and learn to share their document.  Student “Adjective Pyramids” are proudly hanging in our hallway.

With our work with adjectives completed, we will be moving on to adverbs.  Adverbs describe verbs. They tell how, when, or where action (verbs) happen.

Writing

The students will be given Halloween prompts in writing this week and will have to write several short narratives for example:

It was a dark and stormy night when…

As I walked up the stairs to the haunted house I heard…

Projects

Second grade Scientists have been testing salt, cornstarch, baking soda, and sand.  Through their testing they are learning about some of the properties of these solids.  This week, students will take their knowledge and use it to determine which of these solids are in a mixture.

HALLOWEEN PARTY

Our Halloween Party will be on Thursday, October 31st.  It will take place at 2:45 pm in the 2nd grade classrooms.  Remember students are allowed to wear their costumes on Thursday!!   Also 2nd Graders will not have homework on Halloween!

Wishing all of our 2nd grade families a safe, fun-filled Halloween!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Bloomfield, Miss Garcia, and Mrs. Wiessmer
