November 12, 2018 by Jami Rowlett

Hello First Grade Families,

I hope everyone had a nice long weekend.  Happy Veteran’s day to everyone who has or is currently serving our country. We are forever thankful for you!!

Only 3 more days of school then we have Fall break.  I can’t believe how fast this school year is going. November 29 will be the end of the first trimester.  We will be having our parent teacher conferences on December 7.  A sign up will be coming via email soon, for you to sign up for a parent teacher conference.

Fall Break (11/19-11/22)-  We will be off school for 10 days total.  We will not have homework over the break.  I strongly encourage you to have your child read over the break to keep up their skills.  If you would like to use Raz-Kids for reading practice, please email me for the log-in information.

Last week in first grade:

  • we learned about the difference between an author and an illustrator.
  • we reviewed open and closed syllable types.

This week in first grade:

  • we will learn that a verb is a word, it’s an action word.
  • we will read Run, Turkey, Run and complete a story map about the book.

A Math Message from Miss Garcia:

Last week we worked on problem solving strategies.  For example: when asked “how many altogether” this means to add.  Or when asked “how many more” there are a few strategies such as counting on from the smaller number or counting back from the greater number.  The 1st graders have practiced counting on and counting back using both a number line and a 100 chart. Remember that when they are working on homework there are these tools for them to use in their binder.

This week the 1st graders will work with and create fact families.  I created an example below.

Fact Family: 7, 3, 10

7 + 3 = 10

3 + 7 = 10

10 – 7 = 3

10 – 3 = 7

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!~
