Mrs. Renfroe 2/9/20

February 9, 2020 by Janet Renfroe

We had a great introduction to our social studies unit last week. I loved the enthusiasm and excitement that each student had while sharing their family information sheet!

Important information for this week:

Candy grams will available for purchase during lunch and will be delivered on February 13th.  They are $0.50 each and can be purchased for anyone in the school. February 12th is the final day for students to purchase candy grams. Please keep in mind that we will not be having a class party for Valentine’s Day. If your child would like to bring cards to share with the class on Thursday instead of purchasing candy grams they may do so. We will pass them out at the end of the day so students can open them on Friday.  If a student is bringing in outside cards or treats to pass out they must bring enough for the whole class. Please be sure to include 24 and make sure to only write who they are from. This makes the passing out process much easier.

Parent/Teacher conferences will be February 28th.  A Sign-Up Genius link will be sent through email this week. Please note that the sign-up genius link from me will be for 3rd grade families. If your student is in my 4th grade ELA class and you would like to meet with me, please send me an email so we may arrange a time to do so!

This week, we will be practicing the following skills:

Social Studies:  We will continue discussing immigration by reading about the process immigrants went through at Ellis Island.

Writing: By the end of the week we will have our final drafts completed for our opinion papers.  In cursive we will be working on the letter V.

3rd Grade ELA:  We will use our mentor text, When Marian Sang, to work on our inferencing skills and practice using commas in addresses and dates.  During Daily 5, students will work on Must Do/May Dos and meet with me for reading groups.

Spelling:

  • Students will receive their new word list this week. They should continue to practice their spelling words for at least 5 minutes each night as part of their 20 minutes of reading homework.  Spelling test will be on Thursday, February 20th.

Latin/Greek:

  • Every week, students are given 5 words that introduce either a new prefix or suffix.  They will practice these words throughout the week and have a test every Thursday over the prefix or suffix meaning.  Our prefix this week will be “in”.
