Mrs. Renfroe 2/23/20

February 23, 2020 by Janet Renfroe

I can’t believe we are already moving into trimester 3! Time is zooming fast in 3rd grade! Last week students completed their I AM poems. They chose a picture of an immigrant and wrote a poem based off of how the person in the photo felt. I was so impressed with the empathy, understanding and maturity that all of the students displayed during this activity. The poems turned out great and are displayed with the pictures outside our classroom. If you get a chance be sure to check them out!

Our class catch me jar winners for 3rd and 4th grade are displayed below. Both students were recognized for going above and beyond in the classroom. Well done!

This week, we will be practicing the following skills:

Social Studies:  We will experience the encounters immigrants faced when they arrived at Ellis Island through an immigration simulation. Please make sure your child brings their suitcase items, completed suitcase form and any clothing items they will be wearing for Wednesday’s simulation by Tuesday the 25th. I will be sending home paperwork and information tomorrow with those students that their parents signed up to help on Wednesday. Please let me know if you do not receive it or have questions.

Writing:  We will synthesize the information we learned about the immigration process to write a How To Immigrate to America piece.  In cursive we will be working on the letter X.

3rd Grade ELA:  We will use our mentor text, Book of Animal Poetry, to examine poetry structure and the use of poetic devices as we read several mentor poems.  During Daily 5, students will work on Must Do/May Dos and meet with me for reading groups.

Spelling:

  • Students should continue to practice their spelling words for at least 5 minutes each night as part of their 20 minutes of reading homework.  Students will receive new spelling words this week. Spelling test will be on Thursday, March 5th.

Latin/Greek:

  • Every week, students are given 5 words that introduce either a new prefix or suffix.  They will practice these words throughout the week and have a test every Thursday over the prefix or suffix meaning.  Our prefix this week will be “dis”.
