Mrs. Renfroe 2/1/20

February 1, 2020 by Janet Renfroe

We wrapped up our science unit this week by making our own fossils. The kids had a blast with their creations!

Our catch me jar winner for 3rd grade is shown below. This student was recognized for going above and beyond in the classroom. Well done!

I have a large job available for interested parents. I have an extensive classroom library and am wanting to have all of the books AR leveled. It would require the volunteer to find the AR level, label the book and cover the label with tape. This can be done in class during school hours or at home. Please email me if you are interested in this volunteer opportunity. Thank you!

This week, we will be practicing the following skills:

Social Studies: Please remember to send completed forms back to school with your child by February 3rd. We will begin our exploration of immigration to America by examining some of the reasons people immigrated. To help us with our introduction on the topic of immigration we will be watching Fievel: An American Tale to discuss why the characters from the movie wanted to immigrate.

Writing: We will begin planning and writing our opinion essay using the OREO format, introductions that hook the reader, and strong conclusions.  In cursive we will be working on the letter U.

3rd Grade ELA:  We will use our mentor text, I Wonder Why Penguins Can’t Fly, to introduce nonfiction text features and review main idea and supporting details. During Daily 5, students will work on Must Do/May Dos and meet with me for reading groups.

Spelling:

  • Students should continue to practice their spelling words this week for at least 5 minutes each night as part of their 20 minutes of reading homework.  Spelling test will be on Thursday, February 6th.

Latin/Greek:

  • Every week, students are given 5 words that introduce either a new prefix or suffix.  They will practice these words throughout the week and have a test every Thursday over the prefix or suffix meaning.  Our suffix this week will be “less”.

4th Grade ELA: We will use our mentor text, I Wonder Why Penguins Can’t Fly, to practice identifying nonfiction text features and review main idea and supporting details. During Daily 5, students will work on Must Do/May Dos and meet with me for reading groups.
