Mrs. Renfroe 12/8/19

December 8, 2019 by Janet Renfroe

Time is flying and we have been busy in class! I have listed a few items of importance below. Please be sure to reach out to me with any questions you may have.

** MAPS testing for reading begins tomorrow! Please make sure your student gets lots of sleep this week and eats breakfast prior to coming to school.

** Winter weather is in full swing. We had lots of kids that were soaking wet last week from the rain and snow. I did let the 3rd grade students know that they may bring in an extra pair of clothes, socks, gloves and shoes to keep in their banker box. Please make sure your student is leaving the house with proper winter attire. Hats, gloves, scarves, coats, etc. are needed. Unless their is extreme weather, students will be outside daily.

** We are still needing parent chaperones for our walking field trip next week. Please take a look at our class sign up link at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0c44a9aa2ba5fc1-movie

** We will be doing a STEM challenge on Wednesday. I am needing as many plastic bottles as possible. They can be any size. If you have any empty ones at home, please send them in with your student prior to Wednesday. Thank you!!

** Student Council has extended their pajama drive for one more week! If you’d like to donate pajamas for kids in need, please have your student bring them in.

** The 8th grade classes will be hosting their annual lemonade/hot chocolate stand the week of December 16-19th. Students from all grade levels may purchase drinks during lunch and recess. If your student would like to purchase a lemonade or hot chocolate, please have them bring in their loose change. This is always a fun event to watch the 8th grade students use their marketing skills with the younger students. The younger grades definitely make them work for their business!

** I will be sending out another sign up genius link this week for our class holiday party. We will be having it on Thursday, December 19th in the afternoon.

** 3rd grade students will be walking to the Fallon theater on Monday the 16th and 4th grade students will be going on Tuesday the 17th. Both classes have chosen the movie Home Alone. If you do not want your student to attend the field trip, please contact me as soon as possible.

Our 3rd grade class catch me jar winner from last week is show below. He was recognized for going above and beyond in the classroom. Well done!

This week, we will be working on the following skills:

Science: Students will participate in a Grow the Grinch’s Heart STEM challenge. We will experiment with the reaction between baking soda and vinegar. This will lead us into a discussion about carbon dioxide, greenhouse gases, and cause and effect.

Writing: Students will practice their persuasive writing by creating a real estate listing for a gingerbread property they will create themselves. We will present our listings to the class to see who can convince their classmates to “buy” their listing! I am excited to see the finished products! In cursive we will be working on the letter O.

3rd Grade ELA: Our focus skill this week is using inferencing skills to better understand the story and writing how-tos using transition words. We will also continue to compare and contrast similar texts. We will be reading The Carpenter’s Gift as our mentor text and comparing it to the story The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree. During Daily 5, students will continue to meet with me in small groups to review skills and work on their reading strategies.

4th Grade ELA:  Our focus skill this week is using inferencing skills to better understand the story and writing detailed how-tos using transition words and descriptive verbs and adjectives. We will also continue to compare and contrast similar texts. We will be reading The Carpenter’s Gift as our mentor text and comparing it to the story The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree. During Daily 5, students will continue to meet with me in small groups for their novel studies and book clubs.

REMINDERS:

  • Winter Break is from December 23rd to January 3rd.
  • Reading homework log needs to be signed every night and homework folders brought back to class everyday. Logs will be checked every Monday.
  • A quick reminder, please be sure to label items (jackets, water bottles, hats etc.).  The Lost and Found Table is getting very full. Please make sure you are sending your student to school with a jacket. It is getting chilly outside and can be chilly at times inside the classroom.
  • If your child has a game or extracurricular activity, I would love to come and show them my support. Please let me know when and where so I can try to make it!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Have a wonderful week!

Thank you,

Mrs. Renfroe
