Mrs. Renfroe 1/12/20

January 12, 2020 by Janet Renfroe

We started our first week back from break with a bang! Students jumped right back into routine and did great. We will continue to reinforce expectations and skills as we move forward.

Scholastic is celebrating their 100th Anniversary this month. With every $10 family order, our class will receive 100 Extra Bonus Points! Our class code for ordering is V8KG9. All orders are due by January 30th. The points add up quickly, and students are loving the books we are able to get for our class library with the Scholastic points from student orders.

Our 4th grade catch me jar winner is featured below. This student was recognized for going above and beyond in the classroom. Well done!

This week, we will focus on the following skills:

Science: We will continue our weather unit this week. On Monday, students will experiment with the reaction of salt and ice to create frost. Wednesday, we will investigate how tornadoes move material. We are still needing 2 liter bottles for our tornado experiment on Wednesday. If you have any, please send them in with your student!

Writing:  We will continue our study of opinion writing by learning how to provide reasons to support an opinion. Students will continue to use their opinion stems when giving reasons for their opinion. Students will also focus on using linking words. In cursive we will be working on the letter R.

3rd Grade ELA:  We will use our mentor text, The Polar Bear Son, to discuss how readers synthesize information to add to their schema while they read. Additionally, we will review the differences between adjectives and adverbs, and practice identifying irregular verbs. During Daily 5, students will continue to meet with me in small groups to review skills and work on their reading strategies. I will also be giving new spelling word lists to students when they meet with me for small group. Students will have an assessment on their spelling words on Thursday, January 23rd. In Latin and Greek, students will be studying the prefix “re”. Students may use part of their 20 minutes of reading time each evening to study their Latin and Greek words and spelling words. Latin and Greek words will be assessed weekly. Spelling words will be assessed every other week.

REMINDERS:

  • Our Scholastic class code for ordering is V8KG9. All orders are due by January 30th.

  • Reading homework log needs to be signed every night and homework folders brought back to class everyday. Logs will be checked every Monday.

  • A quick reminder, please be sure to label items (jackets, water bottles, hats etc.).  The Lost and Found Table is getting very full. Please make sure you are sending your student to school with a jacket. It is getting chilly outside and can be chilly at times inside the classroom.

  • If your child has a game or extracurricular activity, I would love to come and show them my support. Please let me know when and where so I can try to make it!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Have a wonderful week!

Thank you,

Mrs. Renfroe
