Mrs. Farley, Nov 12-15

November 12, 2018 by Kim Sorensen & Rebecca Farley

Hi! I hope y’all enjoyed your long weekend and took time to appreciate our Veterans and all they have sacrificed for us. This will be a short school week, yeah! However, we will still have it cram packed full of fun and learning. In projects, we will continue working on our Nevada maps. Students have been working hard on coloring their maps, identifying the counties and county seats. They will get to the fun and creative part of the assignment this week, by creating a map key and symbols for the other physical features on the map. If we can stay focused and on task this week, we hope to complete the map creations and present them to parents and Mrs. Feest’s class this Thursday. Be on the lookout for an email on Wednesday to confirm presentation day and time.

In writing, we will continue to work on our personal narrative writing skills. I took my time and carefully graded the narrative/seed stories this weekend (that the students submitted last week.) Unfortunately, the class as a whole didn’t meet the rubric requirements or personal standards that I was expecting. I feel we need to step back, review the basics, and work slowly through the basic writing techniques. The kids have great ideas and topics, but I want them to receive more practice with the basic writing skills and the writing process. Once I feel they have a firm grasp on this skill, we will move on. I want to be sure they are confident in their narrative writing before we focus on other content. However, the students had already started on their personal narrative based on their previous Nevada Settler group. We will move that assignment to the back burner for now. I have examples of personal narratives I will carefully review with the kids so they can see first hand the expectations of this assignment.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I will try and squeeze in activities and writing prompts that allow students to express their gratitude and thankfulness.

Have a great week and as always, please let me know if I can help your child in any way.
