Math Update Week 6

October 14, 2018 by Kim Sorensen & Rebecca Farley

4th Grade:

We finished up our rounding unit with our assessment on Thursday and I am so proud of how well everyone did.  This is always a tough concept and I can tell they worked hard on this!  This next week we will be adding and subtracting.  We will start off reviewing partial sum and partial difference strategies and then quickly move on to teach the standard algorithm.  (I’m sure many of you will be excited to see your children doing it your way finally!) I am confident that this will be pretty smooth sailing for these kids.

Questions to ask your child this week:

  • How is the standard algorithm similar to partial sums and partial differences?
  • What does regrouping look like in subtraction when using the standard algorithm?

Additional IXLs to do at home: 4th grade – B.1, B.2, B.3, C.1, C.2, C.3

3rd Grade:

We started our addition and subtraction unit this week with partial sums up to the thousands, working with negative numbers and combos to ten.  This week we will be focusing on partial differences up to the one thousands and additional practice with partial sums.  I will be posting a video at the beginning of the week demonstrating both of these strategies.

Questions to ask your child this week:

  • Give them a problem and have them teach you the strategy!

Additional IXLs to do at home: 3rd grade – C.1, C.2, C.3, C.4, D.1, D.2, D.3, D.4
