Math Update for Week 2

September 14, 2018 by Kim Sorensen & Rebecca Farley

We had a great week in our classroom with math!  Both classes worked on the different elements of the balanced math program and I can tell that it is going to help us be more successful mathematicians!  We rolled out our review, mental math, daily concept and problem solving portions of our day.  I am excited to see these students take off.

4th Grade:

We studied numbers using the standard, word and expanded form of a number up to the millions.  We learned about how a digit’s place tells us what the digit’s value is.  I gave them questions looking for the place or the value.  It was tough for them to switch back and forth between the two concepts but they are getting it!  This next week we will continue to study place value, review and hopefully test on all that we have learned so far.  I made a little video of our place versus value lesson.  Feel free to click on the link and check it out with your child and see how they do! https://sites.google.com/oasisacademyfallon.us/3rd4thmathvideos/place-value

By the end of this week your child should be able to:

  • Compare 2 numbers and order a group of numbers from greatest to least and least to greatest up to the one millions place
  • Give numbers that are 10, 100, and 100+ more or less than a given number
  • Complete number patterns using place value

Questions to ask your child this week:

  • What strategy do you use to compare two numbers?
  • What strategy do you use to order a group of numbers?
  • Give them a number that is in the thousands or bigger and ask them to give you a number that is 100, 1,000, 10,000, etc. more or less than that number.

If you’re looking for some added IXL practice at home, the following lessons match up nicely with what we’re doing in class:  IXL A.1 – A.9.  All of the students’ logins are either their first then last name (all lowercase) followed by a 233, or their first initial then last name and 233.  Everyone’s password in 4th grade is sor18.
