Happy Valentine’s Week!! As has been mentioned in last week’s blog, since Valentine’s Day is on a school day, we will be celebrating it with a small party on Thursday. Students may bring in Valentines to give to their classmates. We will pass out Valentines and play some Valentine related games on Thursday afternoon from 3:00 till 3:55 pm. We are keeping it very simple!!
Also on February 14th students may opt to wear white, red, or pink instead of their regular uniforms. To do this students are being asked to bring in a $1.00 donation that will go to the Antoniono Family. The clothing worn must cover as much as their regular Oasis uniform.
We have continued working on adding with renaming within 1,000. This is a very complicated standard (remember, it was started at the end of the first trimester). All of the time has been very worthwhile, as students are really picking up on the renaming, because it is all done through decomposing and composing numbers students are really understanding how to break down and rename the different place values.
This past week we focused on addition using branch method on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This week we will continue to work on adding with renaming within 1,000 and will work on subtracting with renaming in the one’s and ten’s place. Here’s an example…
|7 6 2 – 4 3 =
↙ ↓ ↘ ↙ ↘
700 60 2 40 3
700 + 20 – 1 =
|1. Decompose numbers by place value.
2. Group hundreds. Group tens. Group ones.
3. Subtract hundreds. Subtract tens. Subtract ones.
4. Watch out for negative differences.
5. Write and solve renamed equation.
In Language we are finished up our work with reflexive pronouns. Students worked on identifying reflexive pronouns, determining the noun or pronoun that the reflexive noun is referring back to, and using reflexive pronouns in a sentence. Students were assessed on Thursday.
All writers in 2nd grade have completed a note taker outling their personal narratives. They have practiced orally telling their narratives to partners and a few students have practiced orally telling their narratives to the class. We have started writing our rough drafts and will continue with them into next week. Students will also start the revising and editing process.
In projects students have been focusing on the Earth’s Surface. All week we have been looking at the main bodies of water on Earth (oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, ponds, canals, and glaciers). We have done this through viewing the bodies of water via Google Earth, matching pictures to definitions, and creating a map featuring the 5 oceans.
Remember that President’s Day is coming up on Monday, February 18th, there will be no school. Wishing everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day and a Happy President’s Day!
