This week in class:

7th Grade ELA–We will start reading The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, this week. Students will work through various themes in the book, along with character development. I love this book, and can’t wait to share it with these kids!In writing, they will finish their narratives and get ready to write another one! Students are working on using narrative techniques, such as dialog, sensory details, and figurative language, to entertain their reader.

8th Grade ELA–This week students will begin reading To Kill a Mockingbird. This is my favorite book, and I always look forward to reading it with the kids. Students will explore various themes, including racism, literacy, and poverty. We will make connections between historical moments in America and Harper Lee’s fictional accounts in her novel. In writing, students will write short informative paragraphs around various topics, including our class novel.

Projects–Students will finish their Civil War project. They will participate in a gallery walk to view other students’ work on Thursday. We will begin our study of the Industrial Revolution, the Gilded Age, and the Progressive Era next week.

Homework: both 7th and 8th read for 20 minutes and complete homework log.
