Announcements:

Middle School Valentines Day dance is this Thursday, February 14th.

Mrs. O’Flaherty sent an email last week with all the details you should need. Please remember, students (and their guest) must bring a signed permission slip to the dance or sometime this week.

Candy Grams are currently up for sale.

Middle School Student Council is selling to grades 3-8 until February 13th. They are 50 cents apiece and will be delivered on February 14th.

7th Grade Reading – We are continuing on with Blood on the River. The class as a whole did really well on last week’s comprehension checkpoints and will cruising along with chapters 14-19 this week. With these chapters we will begin to see the story from different character’s point of view which will change the experiences of Jamestown.

7th Grade Writing – In writing this week, students will use narrative techniques to write about a mistake they made in life and learned from. They will use expression and reflection techniques from Kelly Gallagher’s book, Write Like This.

8th Grade Reading – This the goal is to read chapters 12-17 of To Kill a Mockingbird. The class continues to connect to and ask relevant questions about to difficult topics that arise. With these questions have come excellent discussions.

8th Grade Writing – Narrative essays are in the works! This week the class is putting together their rough drafts and will move into their final revisions on Thursday. It has been much harder than any of us expected to just pick an event or time in their lives to write about. Today’s progress was promising and I’m hoping that once they get going the ideas will start to flow more easily.

Social Studies Projects – We’ve moved into the final region of our 13 colonies with the Middle Colonies. We will focus mainly on New York and Pennsylvania this week because New Jersey was under New York’s control and Delaware was under Pennsylvania’s control. On Tuesday we will play a Fur Trading simulation game, Wednesday we will learn all about the Quaker way of life and finally on Thursday, the class will complete the 13 colonies vocabulary test and compare and contrast each Colonial region by identifying the characteristics of each.

Valentines Day Celebrations – The kids know that if they want to bring in something small to exchange or a treat for the class, that would be great (not mandatory). We have projects and PE Thursday afternoon, so our time to “party” is limited.
