December 2nd-5th, 2019
I hope everyone had a great break and a wonderful Thanksgiving. We only have three weeks until Christmas break. 🙂
Reminders and Announcements:
- High school and middle school student councils will be participating in the Scholastic Pajama Drive again this year. We will collect new pajamas for children in need in our area. The tags should be on. We need all sizes (infant to teens). The drive will run from November 12-December 6. Donations can be dropped off in Mrs. O’Flaherty’s room. Our goal for this year is 150 sets of pajamas! Let’s do it! If you have any questions please email Mrs. O’Flaherty. Thank you so much for all of your support!
- LITERACY STRATEGY OF THE WEEK! This week our strategy focuses on improving fluency. Fluent readers should read smoothly and with expression when reading aloud. Have your child read aloud for nightly homework to practice good fluency. Your child should be using punctuation to help with phrasing and expression. For example, when reading a sentence that ends in a question mark or exclamation mark, your child should read the text to show that it is a question or exclamatory sentence. Your child should also pause at commas and read in phrases that make sense. You can also model good reading fluency by reading aloud to your child while he or she follows along on the page with you.
5th grade Reading/Writing: Students will be making final revisions to their narratives. We will move on to informative/explanatory writing. Students will take notes to help define this type of writing. We will be practicing informative/explanatory reading and writing in conjunction with our projects unit on the interaction of Earth’s spheres.
5th grade Projects: We will move on to Earth’s spheres. Students will learn about each of Earth’s spheres (hydrosphere, atmosphere, geosphere, and biosphere) and then develop a model to show and explain how each sphere interacts. Our goal is to complete the unit and project before we go on Christmas break.
6th grade Reading/ Writing: Students will begin reading our next novel Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelson. Students will be working on identifying types of conflicts throughout the novel, analyzing the use of flashback, explaining plot development, and analyzing character traits and changes. Students will also work on writing thoughtful responses, using the A.C.E.S. plan, to literary prompts based on their reading each week.
