4th Grade Distance Learning Information

March 24, 2020 by Kim Sorensen & Rebecca Farley

Dear 4th Grade Families,

We hope this letter finds you all well, healthy, and in good spirits. We miss our students! We have been busy working hard to adjust to this new at home distance learning situation we now find ourselves in. Please know that we are in this together! We will surely have some bumps, but we will figure it out and look forward to working together.

In Mrs. Sorensen’s home we traded our cruise vacation for a week of house painting.  To get ready for ‘school at home’ we have set up little desk areas in our main room and are trying to create a schedule that will help us be successful with so much home time.  This next few weeks I will be monitoring my own four children’s learning while reaching out to each of you. It will be exciting to connect in a different way, but also may be stressful as we all try to work together.

Mrs. Farley enjoyed a quiet spring break at home, (still) working on the new house and getting my daughter recovered from her tonsillectomy. We’ve been pretty diligent about practicing “social distancing” but getting lots of fresh air and outside time. My own kids are excited about being homeschooled, so we have done our best to transform our living room into a classroom.

Now on to business. . .
This is the only email/blog post that you will receive for the foreseeable future.  All class wide communication will now take place inside our Google Classroom. If your child does not have a google classroom for math, an invitation has been sent to their email.  Your child should now have 4 Google Classrooms. One for math, one for reading, one for writing, and one for projects. Parents, please work with your child to familiarize both of you with your child’s Google Classrooms. A “how to” video has been posted to their Writing and Projects google classrooms, as well as on the OA Facebook page.

There are two ways to obtain the lessons each day for math and writing:

  1. A link to a daily live session will be inside our Google Classroom. Go to the class you are attending.  Click on Classwork. Click on Google Calendar on the top of the screen. Click on the live session class you are attending.  Click on Join Hangouts Meet. Kids will have the opportunity to ask questions during the live session through by using the chat icon in the upper right hand corner.
  2. The mini lesson each day will be recorded and posted on Google Classroom, in the Classwork section AFTER the live session ends. This is for any student who was not able to attend the live session. If your student has content based questions outside of our live sessions, he/she can post their question in the comment section under that link, and we will answer those questions as soon as possible.

Parents, if you have a personal question regarding your child, then email the teacher that would best be able to answer that question.

Our live session schedule looks like this:

  • 9:00am – Math with Mrs. Sorensen
  • 10:00am – Reading with Mrs. Renfroe
  • 1:00pm- Writing and Projects with Mrs. Farley

Inside the packet that came home, the work is color coded by week.

March 25 & 26 –        pink

March 30 – April 2 –   green

April 6 – 9 –                gold/yellow

April 13 – 16 –            white (this week does not include reading)

We will discuss the contents of each color coded packet during the live sessions.

Here is an example of what your learning time might look like with the live sessions.  Please keep in mind that we don’t want this to be a stressful situation!  Do what works best for your student. We are required to be in personal contact with each student consistently.  If your child can join the live sessions, this will count as that contact. If not, each of their teachers will be calling those students not reached during the live sessions to meet this requirement.  Please note that when we call it will either come up as a ‘no id call’ or a random number. If you have any questions with how this works, please refer to Mrs. Mackedon’s morning message from today (3/24) on Facebook.

Sending our love,

Mrs. Sorensen and Mrs. Farley

PS.  Please remember that we also have young children learning from home with us so please excuse any laughing, screaming, crying, or random noises in the background during our video chats and phone calls.
