4th Grade with Mrs. Antoniono & Mrs. Feest

Week 12 – OnoFeest

Bighorns, This week in math, we finished up our trimester with our big unit test on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  We also ensured that we remembered concepts taught earlier this trimester by taking an end-of-trimester assessment on Thursday.  All of this data will be reflected on your student’s report card next week.  I am excited to announce we will be shifting gears and will begin working with fractions next week.  Fractions are a huge portion of 4th...

Week 11 – OnoFeest

Bighorns, This week in 4th grade math, we continued to work on multi-digit division. This is the most challenging computation as the children are still learning how numbers fit inside each other. There were a couple of bumps in the road because of Tuesday’s power outage and Thursday’s Halloween parade. But come next week, I think we’ll be able to solidify our knowledge of partial quotient division.  Just a reminder- when content based homework comes home each week, please hold...

Week 10 – OnoFeest

Bighorns, In writing, students began their second narrative masterpiece. They brainstormed topics to narrow down from a watermelon (broad topic) to a seed (specific moment). They began drafting and will continue with this stage in the writing process on Monday. Revisions, editing, and publishing this masterpiece will continue through next week. In projects, students learned about a map key and why it is an important part of a map. They finished locating physical features on their large...

Week 9 – OnoFeest

Bighorns, This week in math we’ve been chugging away at multi-digit multiplication.  I’d like for every student to use the traditional algorithm for problems that are being multiplied by 1 digit.  When we are multiplying numbers by a 2-digit number, I’m OK with some students continuing to use the area model to organize their thinking.  We took a mini quiz on these concepts on Thursday.  Those results will come home on Monday.  Take a look at how...

Week 8 – OnoFeest

Hello! In math this week we continued to work with multi-digit multiplication. I taught the traditional algorithm and we practiced our work with real life story problems. For the most part I was impressed with how open minded the class was to attack challenging story problems. I lean on the students’ comprehension skills from reading to help them discern what needs to be done in a story problem. I did noticed more productivity when the students were working in partners and groups. But...

Week 7 – OnoFeest

Bighorns! This week in math we solidified our learning of the traditional algorithm of addition and subtraction with some story problems. We are using bar models to help us make sense of the story problems. Bar models will be used in math for years to come, so this is just the beginning. Nevertheless, they’re doing a pretty good job. Then we moved on to large digit multiplication using area models. They took to this like champions! I even heard some of them say it was fun! Ha! We will...

Week 6 – OnoFeest

Bighorns This week in 4th grade math we learned the standard/traditional algorithms for adding and subtracting!  Yay!  Feel free to guide your student at home using this strategy (that we know and love).  After years of learning value based arithmetic, it was interesting to see how uncomfortable they were with the standard approach. Practice will make perfect.  We also are working on linking bar models to our understanding of addition and subtraction.  Bar models...

Week 5 – OnoFeest

Bighorns, This week in 4th Grade Math we finished up our unit on finding multiples, factors and prime and composite numbers. It’s been fun watching the children find patterns in numbers and apply their findings to challenging questions. We took a test on Thursday and the tests will be coming home next week. Remember, if your student does not do well on an assessment, they will be pulled by me in the afternoon to work on those math concepts. We will continue to strengthen their knowledge...

Week 4 – OnoFeest

Bighorns! This week in math we completed our first test on the Number Sense concepts we’ve covered so far this year.  Mrs. Sorensen and I are still analyzing the results, and the tests will be handed back this week. We want to remind everyone that we made a huge shift in teaching the Singapore curriculum to a “T”- which is far more challenging than just the Common Core standards.   Other graded classwork and home enjoyment will be coming home this week...
